At The Hearing Care Centre, we believe that every individual’s journey is unique and inspiring. This month, we’re delighted to feature a very special story from not one, but two clients who have walked this path together.

Meet our remarkable couple, who have been clients at our Langham branch and whose story beautifully illustrates how addressing hearing challenges can strengthen not just communication, but the bonds that matter most. Married for 56 years and both in their late seventies, they’ve built a life rich in community involvement and family connections.

Their journey began about a decade ago with subtle signs – the volume creeping up on the television, the need for subtitles, and those occasional communication mishaps that, while sometimes amusing, hinted at a deeper issue. What makes their story particularly compelling is how they navigated this challenge together, supported by their family and eventually finding their way to expert care.

From initial scepticism to embracing positive change, their experience offers valuable insights for couples and individuals alike who may be contemplating that crucial first step toward better hearing. Their candid reflections on family dynamics, community engagement, and the practical realities of hearing loss provide both reassurance and inspiration.

We hope their journey resonates with you as much as it has with us.

“I am a retired social care manager and educator, Avril is also retired and is a qualified art teacher. We’re both in our late seventies (77 years old), have been married for 56 years(!) and live in a village where we are both quite involved in community groups and activities.

We both noticed changes to our hearing about 10 years ago when we found we needed increasingly to use subtitles when watching TV, or when our daughters visited and commented that we had the TV turned up too loud, and how the occasional communication breakdown between us became more frequent often with hilarious results and very infrequently , of course, causing a bit of an argument!

Our eldest daughter is a qualified audiologist and after a somewhat unsatisfactory experience with an NHS assessment at primary care level, we were encouraged by our daughter to bypass the NHS and refer ourselves to the Hearing Care Centre having heard positive things about it.

Our initial first visit and assessment experience was carried out very well and confirmed that we were suffering a hearing loss – we were (especially me) a little sceptical about the degree of loss and I suppose was in a bit of denial up to that point. Going to your Langham branch is so convenient for us and the unit’s set up is very modern and smart without being in the least intimidating.

Recommending the right hearing aids for us has been very positive and the extended support package (for 4 years) that we purchased is very reassuring in providing check ups, reassessments etc. It is now very noticeable now when we are not wearing our hearing aids especially during breakfast table conversations and when our family are all together. Communication is also much improved in other social situations and social groups that we are involved in within our village community. The hearing aids are very discrete and we feel no stigma or embarrassment in wearing them.

We would advise anyone experiencing hearing difficulties at whatever level to seek out help and have an assessment and if possible to relieve our hard pressed NHS, go to a private provider with good reviews or positive word of mouth recommendation.

We cannot fault the service that we have received so far from the Hearing Care Centre and are glad now that we took those steps with the Centre’s help to acknowledge our hearing loss and taking steps to improve the overall quality of our lives.”

We’re incredibly grateful to this wonderful couple for sharing their story with such honesty and warmth. Their journey reminds us that taking that first step toward better hearing is an investment in quality of life, relationships, and staying connected to the people and activities we love.

If their experience has resonated with you, we invite you to take that first step yourself. Book an appointment at The Hearing Care Centre today and discover how we can help you on your own journey to better hearing.
