Halle Berry is one of Hollywoods most recognisable stars, known for films such as Die Another Day, Monsters Ball, and the John Wick series.  She has spoken about her partial hearing loss (80%) in one ear, the result of a head injury early in her career.  Whilst her experience was a personal one, she decided to share it publicly to inspire other people facing similar challengers.

“Hearing loss is just one part of your story – it doesn’t define you.”

Overcoming Challenges

At first, she adapted by learning to position herself in conversations to hear better and by relying more on visual clues – I think this will be relatable to a lot of people?  She has been wearing a hearing aid since 2006.

Her resilience has paid off; she went on to win an Academy Award and continues to be a sought-after actor and Director.  She uses her platform to encourage self-advocacy in health matters and to raise awareness about domestic violence, the cause of her injury.

A Positive Perspective

Rather than seeing her hearing loss as a limitation, she views it as one aspect of her life experience -something that’s shaped her.
