Ronald Reagan, the 40th President of the United States, was known for his warm voice, quick wit, and Hollywood charm. In the 1980’s, Ronald Reagan began wearing hearing aids – a decision that made him the first President to do so while in office.  It was questioned if this was an age-related health issue, of which the White House responded “What’s age got to do with it”.

He had been exposed to very loud environments in the decades, before politics, that he was a Hollywood actor on very challenging film sets.  He began to notice difficulty hearing conversations, particularly in noisy surroundings and during press conferences.

Changing Perceptions

In 1983, aged 72, he was fitted with a small, in the ear hearing aid, from Starkey.  Starkey are just one of wide range of manufactures that we offer too at the Hearing Care Centre. This hit front page news, not because of the technology but because his openness helped to normalise their use.   At a time when hearing aids were bulky and stigmatised, his decision helped others to feel confident to do likewise.  It is reported that hearing aid sales increased by 30%    At The Hearing Care Centre, we still hear stories with patients having these same thoughts today, forty years later!
