Earwax Removal & Ear Health Assessment

Your ears are precious. They do so much for you. They allow you to build relationships with your friends and family, they help you to enjoy music, enjoy watching films and TV. Your ears help you to know when Amazon are delivering or when your pan of water is about to boil over. Your ears do so much for you and yet most of us take our ears for granted and really only think about them when we have a problem.

As hearing care professionals with over 40 years of combined experience, we understand how important your ears are and so we have developed our ear health assessment to give us the best possible tools to help us to take care of your ear health.

Our Ear Health Assessment is available for just £95

Included in our Ear Health Assessment:

Ear Health Questionnaire

We start off by taking a medical questionnaire to ensure we know as much about your ear health as possible. This allows us to be aware of any linked issues you may be having with your ear health.

Ear Canal Inspection

We then carry out an in-depth ear inspection using the latest clinical or video microscopes to ensure we have the best possible view of your ear canal and ear drum.

Ear Wax Removal

If earwax is present then we will safely remove it using microsuction, the safest method of earwax removal. Microsuction is an effective way of managing excess earwax and removing earwax blockages.

Middle Ear Pressure Tests

We then carry out a pressure test to help us to check that your ear drum and middle ear are healthy and absorbing sound properly.

Hearing Screening

We then carry out a screening hearing test to help us measure if there are any signs of early stage hearing loss. Following all this we can either refer on to a medical professional if needed or we can have a discussion on hearing technology if appropriate.

For Microsuction services outside of Essex, you can search a national database of independent practitioners from this link.

Earwax removal / Microsuction FAQ

How do I know if earwax is causing me a problem?

If you are unsure whether or not you have earwax, please check with your practice nurse.

Does ear microsuction hurt?

Generally microsuction is a quick and comfortable procedure. It can be a little noisy and if the earwax is particularly hard there may be some discomfort which is why we recommend using drops several days before your appointment to soften the earwax. Our practitioners will always take things at your pace.

How often should I have microsuction?

The frequency varies from person-to-person. Some people have treatments quite regularly, but for others a bi-annual appointment is sufficient to keep the earwax from building up. We will send you annual reminders and you can always book a consultation at any time via phone or online.

What happens if I need a specialist referral?

For highly complex cases, we can refer you to Dr Mihaela Carmaciu in Chelmsford, a practising GP with the Diploma in Laryngology and Otology from the Royal College of Surgeons. You can also see your GP for a private referral to our local ENT consultants at the Oaks Hospital in Colchester.

Can earwax affect my hearing aid?

Earwax can get into your hearing aid filter and affect the performance of your instrument. We advise regular replacement of filters, which can be purchased from us and easily fitted yourself. If you are unsure, please ask us for advice.

Is there anyone who shouldn’t have microsuction?

Most people can have microsuction, but there are exceptions such as children under the age of 16. If needed we can make a referral to a specialist (ENT) consultation if there are any concerns. If you are taking blood thinning medications, have a perforation of the eardrum or have any presence of certain infections then you should avoid microsuction. If you are unsure about whether any of these things are affecting you, please do speak to a member of our team at any time.
