Let people know:
If it’s a wedding or a similar large event, ask the host if they can accommodate for your disability such as being seated closer to the front of the congregation. You can also find somewhere quiet to speak to friends and family if you find yourself struggling to hear.
Take short breaks:
It’s important to take regular breaks in order to avoid ‘listening fatigue’, especially when you’re lip-reading for hours on end. This could be in the form of a short rest in another room or sticking with someone you trust to allow you some quiet time.
A small, wireless microphone will amplify the conversation while reducing background noise. Similarly, use your smartphone as an amplifier through speech-boosting apps such as iOS app Live Listen and Android apps Headset Remote and Sound amplifier. Another great app is Chatable, which when held by the person you’re speaking with, allows you to hear much clearer.
Meeting someone new:
Don’t be afraid to let them know about your hearing and how they can help. You’ll likely feel more comfortable when you have disclosed this information. This way, they won’t be offended when you tell them they need to slow down or be clearer!
